2nd Ring Road (Beijing)

The 2nd Ring Road (Traditional北京 二环 路; Pinyin He Huan Lu) in Beijing is simultaneously an urban ring road and a scale. Within the 2nd ring road, lies the old city center of Beijing.

Location

The length of the second ring road is about 30-40 km. The street is only a few kilometers from Tiananmen Square. The central location means that it often leads to traffic jams.

The four corners of the ring road are at Dongzhimen ( in the northeast ), Xizhimen ( in the northwest), Caihuying ( in the southwest ) and Zuo'anmen ( in the southeast ).

History

The northern half of the ring road coincides with the former course of the city walls of Beijing. These were demolished between the 1950s and 1978. The late 1970s, first sections of the Ring Road were completed.

In the 1990s, the state of the road surface deteriorated continuously since the road was designed for a much lower volume of traffic. Therefore, it was completely renovated in 2001.

To counteract the congestion an electronic control system was introduced, which informs the driver about the traffic situation.
