3-methoxy -4- hydroxyphenylglycol ( MHPG, MOPEG ) is a metabolite of Metanephrine, which are the direct products of the degradation of the catecholamines, epinephrine and norepinephrine. In the brain it is the primary metabolite of norepinephrine. It is released into the blood and into the cerebrospinal fluid, an increase may therefore be indicative of previous activity of the sympathetic nervous system.

Low levels in blood and cerebrospinal fluid are associated with anorexia nervosa.
