Isovaleric acid (3- methyl butyric acid) is a monocarboxylic acid Hemiterpen. The name comes from the fact that it is one of four constitutional isomers of valeric acid, and thus is one of the pentanoic acids.

Occurrence

Isovaleric acid is the main valeric acid valerian and can be isolated in large quantities from its root. She finds herself further esterified in many natural products, such as alkaloids or in valepotriates. Isovaleric acid is a metabolite of isoleucine.

Properties

The flash point of the liquid is 78 ° C (measured in the closed cup test), the ignition temperature at 385 ° C. When heated, the liquid above its flash point their Fumes can combine with air to form an explosive mixture. The lower explosive limit is 1.4 percent by volume and 60 g/m3 and the upper explosive limit at about 7.3 volume percent, or about 310 g/m3.
