( 31823 ) Viète is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on 4 October 1999 by the Italian-American astronomer Paul G. Comba at Prescott Observatory ( observatory code 684) in Arizona.

The asteroid is named after the French lawyer and mathematician François Viète (1540-1603) named, who introduced the use of letters as variables in mathematical notation of modern times and can thus be referred to as the founder of modern algebra. The appointment was made on 28 March 2002.
