( 3255 ) Tholen is a Mars' orbit grazing the main asteroid belt, which was discovered by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station (IAU code 688 ) of the Lowell Observatory in Coconino County on September 2, 1980.

It was named after the asteroid U.S. astronomers and planetary scientists David J. Tholen. He works at the Institute for Astronomy of the University of Hawaii and is both the co-discoverer of the asteroid ( 99942 ) Apophis and the creator of a classification scheme for the classification of asteroids based on their spectral properties.
