( 32809 ) Sommerfeld is one of the main asteroid belt, which by the German astronomer frankness Börngen and Lutz D. Schmadel at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg (IAU code 033) was discovered in Thuringia on 10 October 1990.

The asteroid was named after the German mathematician and physicist Arnold Sommerfeld (1868-1951) named, one of the creators of modern theoretical physics and its so-called Sommerfeld school of theoretical physics strongly influenced the development of their science.
