Politics and World Affairs

Western Mediterranean

  • After connecting the Sidiciner to the Samnites Rome an alliance with Capua. The occasion is for the First Samnitenkrieg ( 343-341 BC).
  • Archidamus III. , King of Sparta, following a call for help from Sparta daughter colony of Taranto, which is threatened by attacks of Lucanians and Messapians. The following campaigns are, however, very successful.

Eastern Mediterranean

  • Conflict around the cardia to the Chersonese. The city is allied with Philip II of Macedon; nevertheless sends Athens settlers ( cleruchs ) to Kardia to secure the peninsula, which lies on the vital grain route to Athens to the Black Sea. Philip takes this opportunity to intervene; little later he controls all of Thrace.
  • The city of Knossos on Crete joins forces with Macedonia; Sparta then sends troops against the city.
  • In Eretria in Euboea, the pro- Macedonian party gains the upper hand.
  • End 343 - Persian troops invade Egypt; they succeed, the victory over Nectanebo II, the last Egyptian king from a local dynasty in the next year.
