36th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 36th Infantry Division, from August 3, 1944 36th Grenadier Division and the October 9, 1944 36 people Grenadier Division, was a military major unit of the Wehrmacht.

Division history

The 36th ID was set up on 1 October 1936 in Kaiserslautern and mobilized in August 1939 as part of the first wave. A reorganization to the 36th Infantry Division ( mot ) was carried out on 1 November 1940. In June 1941 the 36th took ( mot ) as part of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union in part. On 26 June 1941, the 36th destroyed along with armored divisions in the Battle of Dubysa a majority of Soviet tank forces in the Baltics. In July 1941, she broke through the Stalin Line and took the town of Ostrow as significant traffic point on the road to Leningrad.

As part of Army Group North, they fought at Leningrad. When the storm Ischorastellung in September 1941, shortly before the 36th Leningrad ( Motorised) played a major role. The IR 118 took it in collaboration with dive bombers, the tactically important Duderhof heights.

In June 1944, the 36th was completely destroyed in Bagration Bobruisk in the operation during the Soviet summer offensive. On August 3, 1944, a reorganization 36th Grenadier Division, but the association was reclassified already on 9 October 1944 36th Volks Grenadier Division.
