( 3749 ) Balam is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on January 24, 1982 in Coconino County by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station (IAU code 688 ) of the Lowell Observatory.

In February 2002, a team of astronomers discovered with the help of the northern telescope at the Gemini Observatory on Mauna Kea, that ( 3749 ) Balam has a moon. This satellite, designated S/2002 ( 3749 ) 1 has a diameter of about 1.5 km away and circulates Balam in 110 days at a distance of 310 km.

In March 2008, Franck Marchis discovered a larger (3 km) inner companion, Balam in 33.38 hours at a distance of 20 km orbits, so it is a triple system.

Was named the asteroid after the Canadian astronomer David D. Balam, the co-discoverer of Comet Zhu - Balam.
