( 3924 ) Birch is one of the main asteroid belt, which by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Palomar Observatory (IAU code 675) was discovered in the evaluation of exposed photographic plates by Charles Thomas Kowal on February 11, 1977.

The asteroid was named after the Australian astronomer Peter V. Birch, who has been working since 1970 at the Perth Observatory, where he made a number of observations in the framework of the International Planetary Patrol Program. In 1977 he was involved in the discovery of the rings of Uranus.
