(431 ) Nephele is an asteroid of the inner main asteroid belt, which was discovered on 18 December 1897 by the French astronomer Auguste Charlois at Nice Observatory.

The asteroid is named after Nephele, a figure from Greek mythology.

Nephele moves at a distance of 2.588 ( perihelion ) to 3.687 ( aphelion ) astronomical units in 5.56 years of the sun. The orbit is inclined 1.827 ° to the ecliptic, the orbital eccentricity is 0.174.

Nephele has a diameter of about 95 kilometers. It is a C-type asteroid and is part of the Themis family.
