• In Samos broke out a rebellion against the rule of Athens, which is suppressed by Pericles.
• In Rome there is a famine, which counteracts according to the tradition of rich plebeians Spurius Maelius by issuing cheap grain.

• Around 440 BC: By an insurrection, the monarchy is overthrown in Cyrene. King Arcesilaus IV and his son Battus must flee to Euhesperides. While planning for a campaign to restore his reign, he is murdered together with his son. This ends the dynasty of Battiaden.
