Between 500 and 450 BC, the city law of Gortyn, island of Crete is set forth in writing on 42 stone blocks. Content is in this longest preserved Greek inscription rather a kind of revision of older laws as a new codification. Codified rules are from the family law, inheritance law, property law, criminal law and procedural law. The text is written in a Doric dialect and consists of twelve columns, each with 53 to 55 lines, the lines guide runs in Boustrophedon.
