  • The Eastern Roman Emperor Anastasius I reformed the monetary system using Greek instead of Roman numerals (see also: Byzantine currency).

Religion

  • November 22: Symmachus, with the support of the Ostrogoth Theodoric Pope as the successor of Anastasius II on the same day chooses a minority of the Roman clergy the Archdeacon Lawrence to the anti-pope, who is supported by the nobility and the Senate of the city. Symmachus calls for a settlement of the schism with Ostrom from Lawrence, however.
  • To 498, Christmas: Probable date for the conversion of Clovis, king of the Christian faith. Baptism takes Bishop Remigius of Reims in Reims. According to tradition, had Clovis, like Constantine, praised before the Battle of Zuelpich 496 against the Alamanni baptism, when he would be victorious. But also plays an important role in his Burgundian wife Chrodechild that has brought him close to the Catholic faith. Together with Clovis also a further 3,000 francs to be baptized. Is that the transfer is done in its Catholic form of Christianity, not as in the other German rulers to Arianism, which favors the fusion of the Germanic and Catholic novels, the Franks under Clovis domination of particular importance.
