History

1963-1971

The 5th Air Division was established in April 1963 from the 1959 set out in Trier Fliegerfuhrer South, which had been reclassified from 1961 to the Air Division South in Karlsruhe. The division headquarters was located in Birkenfeld; the time of preparation of the Division were initially allocated even ground-based air defense forces. After a further reclassification in 1968 was 1971, the subordination of the organizations under the command of the 2nd Air Division and, consequently, the resolution of the 5th Air Force Division.

1991-1994

From the day of German reunification on 3 October 1990 ended the existence of the National People's Army ( NVA). Already in August 1990 Vorkommandos the army were deployed in all areas of the NVA. By 3 October 1990, the preparation of the preparation rod 5th Air Division in the Barnim barracks Strausberg ( Egger village ) was led by Major General Bernhard Mende.

At that time there were in part the previous NVA structures with existing staff, as well as the command LSK / LV, continued. However, the command of the forces of the former LSK / LV was from 3 October 1990 in the leadership of the Bundeswehr. Some posts were twice occupied by NVA and Air Force personnel, the NVA leadership staff was only an advisory capacity.

This transitional period ended April 1, 1991 as the establishment of the command 5th Air Division, and thus the 5th Air Division, was carried out.

To handle not used NVA-LSK/LV-Einheiten the temporary installation of settlement bars in North Troll Hagen and South in Cottbus was ordered, their task was the dissolution of the LSK / LV locations until 30 October 1991. For the resolution of the command LSK / LV a Nachkommando Egger village was ordered.

1994, the 5th Air Division was renamed in Strausberg to 3rd Air Division with simultaneous relocation to Berlin- Gatow and was disbanded there. The units and formations of the 5th Air Force Division of the 3rd Air Division were assumed, which was also released in 2006.

Tasks

The command 5th Air Division was established as a transitional structure until 1994, since according to the Two-Plus- Four Treaty for the period up to the end of the deployment of Russian troops were allowed to operate without NATO subordinate military units in East Germany. Therefore, the command 5th Air Division was given the task to lead the forces of the Air Force in East Germany independently and simultaneously handle the old air forces of the National People's Army as far as possible.

Organization

The preparation rod 5th Air Division was under the Bundeswehr Eastern Command, which was dissolved on 1 July 1991. The insinuation of the 5th Air Division under the Air Force Command was in the same year.
