( 5097 ) Axford is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on 12 October 1983 by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station (IAU code 688 ) of the Lowell Observatory in Coconino County.
The asteroid was named after the New Zealand astrophysicist Ian Axford (1933-2010) named the 1974-1990 as director of the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy initiated and was raised in 1996 to the peerage.
