( 5144 ) Achates is an asteroid from the group of Jupiter Trojans. Thus asteroids are called, which run on the path of Jupiter on the Lagrange points around the sun.

( 5144 ) Achates was discovered on December 2, 1991 by the American astronomer Carolyn Shoemaker at Palomar Jean Spellman Observatory. He is associated with the Lagrangian point L5.

The asteroid is named after the mythological figure of the agate, the friend and brother in arms of Aeneas fleeing from Troy, which is described in the Aeneid.
