( 51826 ) Kalpanachawla is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on 19 July 2001 by the astronomer Eleanor Helin U.S., on recordings of the project Near Earth Asteroid Tracking ( NEAT), with the 120 - inch Oschin Schmidt telescope at the Palomar Observatory (IAU code 644 ) in California had been made.

It was named after the American astronaut of Indian origin Kalpana Chawla, who came when the space shuttle Columbia disaster killed on 1 February 2003.
