526 Antioch earthquake

The earthquake of Antioch in the year 526 is one of the heaviest documented earthquakes and to at least 250,000 deaths have demanded.

The earthquake is narrated by various historians. It was held on 20 May 526, where there were aftershocks until May 29. John Malalas provides the fullest account, according to which virtually all the buildings of Antioch on the Orontes was destroyed. Only a few buildings on mountains that surround the city, the catastrophe will be escaped. After the earthquake there was a fire that the remaining houses, and above all, built by Constantine I the main church of the city, the " Great Church " with its golden dome, destroyed. John Malalas reports of 250,000 dead, Prokopios of Caesarea even of 300,000. Also Seleucia Pieria, the port of the city said to have been destroyed.
