52nd Street is the sixth studio album by American musician Billy Joel. It was released in October 1978 and was also the first album of the artist, which was ranked one on the Billboard album charts. Joel received for the LP also his third and fourth Grammy Award. Also, the first music album was " 52nd Street " in 1982 worldwide, which was released as a compact disc.

Formation

On the album are first amplified jazz influences to hear, such as in the title " Zanzibar ", which is a tribute to the eponymous New York jazz district mid-20th century and on the also a jazz musician Freddie Hubbard giving a guest performance as a trumpeter. The album title " 52nd Street " refers to the 52nd Street of the West Side in Manhattan, in which at that time was Joel's music label and because of their numerous and legendary jazz clubs in former times also known as "Swing Street."

Publication

" 52nd Street " first appeared in October 1978 on Columbia Records, with "My Life" ( # 3 ), " Big Shot " (No. 14), and " Honesty" ( # 24 ) reached three singles, the Top 100 of the U.S. singles chart. Even the critics rated the album mostly positive, at the Grammy Awards 1980, the record was named album of the year.

In the published 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all times of the music magazine Rolling Stone ranked " 52nd Street " the 352nd place. With the introduction of the compact disc in 1982 by Sony Music Entertainment, the plate was also the world's first album, which was released as a music CD.
