The 5S work design, also known in German-speaking 5A, is a method used mainly in the production industry and increasingly in the service sector, where the term is for a defined area of action. It is an idea from the Japanese production concepts. 5S is used as a tool to make jobs and their environment safe, clean and clear. Order and cleanliness are basic requirements for improving the work processes that run on them. It is believed that this also decreases the risk of accidents at work.
Goal of a 5S program is to make workplaces so that the work can proceed smoothly, searches are just as long transport distances and waiting times are avoided and can be worked with wasting free. A clean and tidy work environment is also regarded as a basis for quality work.
As a methodological tool, the 5S can be applied in all areas of an organization, both in production as well as in service and management to data storage and IT. The direct involvement of the affected employee (employee participation) facilitates the identification of vulnerabilities and the implementation of improvements. It also helps in implementing required sustainability. Sustainability is also used to visualize the standards developed in the workplace. Deviations can be quickly recognized by outsiders and challenged by the supervisor.
