5th Armoured Division (Germany)

The 5th Panzer Division was a division of the German Army with last seat of the autonomous divisional staff in Diez. The division was disbanded on 30 September 2001. The units of the Division were stationed primarily in the Rhenish- Hessian space between Koblenz, Zweibrücken and Sontra.

Badge

In silver - black The Badge of the 5th Panzer Division was ( silver cord with Woven black thread ) rimmed shield the symbol of the medieval Counts of Nassau: on blue, sprinkled with golden shingles reason a golden, red reinforced and gezungten lions. The coat of arms motif of the Division was continued by the Armoured Brigade 14, but this sign was outlined in red. The former subordinate brigades of the division all had the same crest motif described above, and differed only by the border.

History

Army Structure I and II

The division was established in 1956 in Grafenwoehr. It was subordinate to the Army Staff II (later II Corps ). The division initially led troops following:

  • Armored Engineer Battalion 5 ( Hann Munden, from 1958 Dillingen )
  • Panzer Signal Battalion 5 ( Grafenwoehr )
  • Medical Battalion 5 (Brann - castle Degerndorf )
  • Light ordnance repair company 5 ( Grafenwoehr )
  • Military Police Company 5 ( Grafenwoehr )
  • Armored Reconnaissance Battalion 5 ( Hemer ).

1957 moved the rod to Wetzlar and Koblenz. The Division moved 1957 to III. Corps. 1958, the association was officially integrated into the NATO. In 1958, the newly established Panzerkampfgruppe C 5 Division was assumed.

Army structure II and III

With the army structure II, 1959, the armored groups were reclassified into brigades. The Division now came under the following brigades:

  • Panzergrenadier Brigade 13 ( from Battle Group B 5 )
  • 14 Armoured Brigade ( from Battle Group A 5)
  • 15 Armoured Brigade ( from Battle Group C 5).

1962 moved the division headquarters to Diez an der Lahn. In 1977, the 14 Armoured Brigade, the Division and the 12th Panzer Division was assumed. For this switched from the 2nd Armoured Brigade, the Hunter Division 6 to the 5th Panzer Division, which then came under the following brigades:

  • Panzergrenadier Brigade 13 ( Wetzlar )
  • Armoured Brigade 6 ( Neustadt ( Hessen) )
  • Armoured Brigade 15 ( Koblenz ).

In 1981, the armored brigade was renamed in 6 Armoured Brigade 14.

In the Army structure V, the division merged with the Military District Command IV to the Military District Command IV / 5 Panzer Division. In 1996, the 39 Armoured Brigade of the 13th Panzer Grenadier Division to the Military District Command IV / 5 Panzer Division. In 1997, the Military District Command IV / 5 was Renamed Panzer Division in the Military District Command II (Mainz) and dissolved the 5th Armored Division on 30 September 2001. The emblem of the division was continued by the armored brigade 14.

Inserts

Soldiers of the 5th Panzer Division were in March 1960 when the earthquake in Agadir ( Morocco) in use. Here the medical battalion is particularly 5 to mention under his former commander Oberfeldarzt Dr. Merkle.
