( 6266 ) Letzel is an asteroid of the inner main belt, which was discovered on October 4, 1986 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos on Kleť Observatory (IAU code 046) in Český Krumlov. Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had given it already on 20 August (1979 QO7 ) and 24 September (1979 SL3 ) 1979 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj.

The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà defined in a 1995 publication ( et al. ) Of seniority ( 6266 ) Letzel to the Flora family, a large group of asteroids that is named after ( 8) flora. Asteroids of this family move in an orbital resonance of 4:9 with the planet Mars around the Sun. The group is also called Ariadne family after the asteroid (43 ) Ariadne. In the more recent AstDyS -2 database ( 6266 ) Letzel is run as a member of the Levin family, named after the asteroid ( 2076 ) Levin. After FORMING classification (Small Main -Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey) is assumed in a spectroscopic investigation of Gianluca Masi, Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel at ( 6266 ) Letzel from a bright surface, it could be so grossly seen to act an S- asteroids.

The timeless ( nichtoskulierenden ) orbital elements of ( 6266 ) Letzel are almost identical with those of five smaller (if one of the absolute brightness of 15.6, 15.4, 15.9, 16.5 and 17.9 compared to 13.5 proceeds ) asteroids: ( 21465 ) Michele Patt, ( 43740 ) 1981 EM9, ( 65743 ) 1993 TY19, ( 168820 ) 2000 SK266 and ( 219 999 ) 2002 PP26.

( 6266 ) Letzel is named after the Czech architect Jan Letzel. The appointment was made on a proposal from the Czech astronomer Jana Ticha by the International Astronomical Union ( IAU) on 2 April 1999.
