(65 ) Cybele is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on March 6, 1861 by the German astronomer Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht temple.

The asteroid was named after Cybele, which is a mother of the gods in Greek mythology.

During an occultation of the star AGK3 19,599 by Cybele in 1979 there was evidence of 11 km of great companion of Cybele in 917 km distance from its center (if the cover was central ) orbits. While this cover also the previously determined by the IRAS satellite circumference of 23 km could be confirmed.

Cybele group

(65 ) Cybele is the namesake of a group of asteroids that run beyond the Hecuba gap with semi-major axes from 3.27 to 3.7 AE their alley. The objects have eccentricities of less than 0.3, and orbital inclinations of less than 25 °. The members of this group are in 7:4 resonance with Jupiter, so its orbit is stabilized.
