He was discovered on September 24, 1960 at Palomar Observatory by Tom Gehrels and the astronomer pair Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld.

The asteroid was named after the German sculptor and graphic artist Wilhelm Lehmbruck.
