( 6540 ) Stepling is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on 16 September 1982 by Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos on Kleť Observatory (IAU code 046) in Český Krumlov.

The asteroid was named after the German -Czech scholar and Jesuit Joseph Stepling (1716-1778) named, at his request in 1751 at the Jesuit College in Prague Clementinum an observatory was set up, he was the director.
