  • Empress Wu Zetian rises Buddhism in China as the state religion.
  • At the top of Venice takes a 697 for the first time elected by the nobility and clergy Dux (later Doge ) as mayor the leadership of the city state. The first holder of the office is Paolo Lucio Anafesto.
