( 849 ) Ara is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on February 9, 1912 by Russian astronomer Sergei Ivanovich Beljavski at the Crimean Observatory in Shimei.

The name of the asteroid is derived from ARA, the abbreviation for American Relief Administration, a U.S. relief operation to combat famine in Europe and the Soviet Union after World War II.
