9 (2005 film)

9 is an American computer-animated short film by Shane Acker from the year 2005.

Action

The world in a post-apocalyptic time: The rag doll number 9 made ​​in a house on a pivoting lever, which is connected by a rope with a book. He also fills a dummy dolls with tar. Then he sits down in front of the house. In itself it has a plug end on a bar light bulb that gives it light, and a mirror-like, small talisman, which he considered. He recalls:

Once he was with his mentor 5 road that led this subject with him. Together they found the bulb which they brought over a metal structure to glow. All the time they were careful against a metal monster with a cat skull, hunting opened it. Whenever the monster was in the area, the mirror surface of the talisman glowed green. Suddenly the green light appeared and 5 gave the talisman to 9, which should hide the light bulb. 5, in turn, the monster wanted to ask, but which appeared behind his back and impaled 5. It sucked him with an equal Talisman heart out - 5 died and the monster took off part of its fabric skin on his own body, which was already covered by the other seven dolls skins that had been killed the monster. At the last second 9 managed to escape from the monster chasing him ever since.

In the presence of the talisman suddenly begins to shine in 9s hand. The doll goes to the house and expected the monster that has taken the weather. It follows the alleged flickering of the talisman, which, however, turns out to be flickering of 9s bulb that lies ahead of the prepared doll. The monster tears on the doll and becomes entangled in the tar. Only now shows 9 pounces from behind on the monster that snatches him the talisman and then flees to a high-lying plank, which ends in the air. The monster lunges at 9, which can be saved by the developed pivot lever design of the plank. At the same time, the book falls on the plank, which breaks down and the monster tearing into the depths. The Plank piece in turn bores into the body of the monster dies.

9 goes to a fire pit where he wants to burn the skins of his friends killed eight ritual. Suddenly he recognizes that his talisman and the monster are two halves that put together give a ball. From the ball now enter the souls of the killed eight dolls that merge with their skins and have thus found their peace. The Talisman goes out and breaks 9 the next morning into the unknown.

Production

Shane Acker created 9 as a master's thesis as part of his dual degree in architecture and animation at UCLA. He originally planned to animate the film in stop-motion, but opted for financial reasons at the end for computer animation. With interruptions, he worked four and a half years at 9

Arable called in an interview the works of Jan Svankmajer and the Brothers Quay as models for his film, as is the oversized baby doll, sitting on the 9, a nod to the Brothers Quay. The scene in the draw 5 and 9, the bulb out of the bulb, is a tribute to Pixar's Luxo and the small lamp. The film was also inspired by the story of Beowulf, so is the book that is used in the case, the story of Beowulf.

9 was adapted into a feature film, in which once again Shane Acker directed. The producers included Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov. # 9 came in 2009 in the cinemas.

Awards

The film was awarded in 2005 at the Student Academy Awards with a gold medal. On the BendFilm Festival he was awarded the Jury Prize in the same year.

9 in 2006 was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " nomination, but could not against The Moon and the Son himself: to enforce Imagined Conversation.
