( 9079 ) Gesner is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered at the European Southern Observatory on 10 August 1994 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst.

The asteroid was named after the Swiss physician and naturalist Conrad Gesner (1516-1565), the founders of modern zoology, and creator of the encyclopedic works Historia Historia Plantarum and animalium.
