9,10-bis (phenylethynyl ) anthracene is a photosensitive polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, which is used in glow sticks as a phosphor. As a result of chemiluminescence it emits green light. Furthermore, 9,10-bis (phenylethynyl ) anthracene, and an organic semiconductor is used as the starting material for the production of organic light emitting diodes (OLED).

The emitted wavelength, i.e., the color due to the chemiluminescence can be varied, inter alia, by the chlorination of Anthracenkomplexes. Chlorinated and from 9,10-bis (phenylethynyl ) anthracene are derived phosphors:
