( 9496 ) Ockels is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten, Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory ( observatory code 675) in California on March 26, 1971.

The asteroid is named after the Dutch physicist Wubbo Ockels ( b. 1946 ) named, who flew in 1985 as part of the D1 mission was the first Dutchman to outer space.
