9th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 9th Infantry Division was a military major formation of the German Wehrmacht.

Division history

Locations:

  • West Wall: September 1939 to May 1940
  • France: May 1940 to June 1941
  • Eastern front, southern sector: June 1941 to August 1944

The 9th ID was set up in October 1934 under the code name " infantry leader V " in Gießen. The code name retained the division until 15 October 1935. Their infantry regiments were formed from the IR 15 of the 5th Division of the Reichswehr.

In August 1939, the Division was mobilized in preparation for the attack on Poland as part of the first wave formation. 1941, the Division part in the Russian campaign and was operating in 1942 after fighting for Isjum, Rostov-on- Don and Bataisk with the V Corps between Rostov and the Caucasus in the area around Krasnodar. 1943 fought the 9th ID to the holding positions in the Kuban bridgehead; from there they had to retreat on the Crimean peninsula to Zaporizhia and Nikopol in Ukraine.

In August 1944, the 9th ID was assigned to Army Group South Ukraine now the destroyed in Chisinau (Moldova). For the survivors, the 9th People's Grenadier Division was formed.
