A-135 anti-ballistic missile system

The A -135 or ABM -3 anti - ballistic missile system ( ABM DIA Code -4, NATO reporting name SAM -4 ) is a Russian military complex for missile defense. The complex is located around Moscow and to protect the city and its surroundings from attacking ballistic missiles. A -135 ABM system is the successor system of the A -35 ABM system from the early 1970s.

Construction

The A -135 system was fully operational on 17 February 1995. It is compliant with the now defunct ABM Treaty of 1972 and is the Russian equivalent of the U.S. Safeguard system from the 1970s dar.

The ABM - 3 system brought against the ABM -1 Galosch significant innovations, it was a phased- array radar and two different types of interceptors used for exo - and endoatmosphärischen use. The missiles are in missile silos in order to protect them from nuclear explosions.

The exoatmosphärischen Abfanglenkwaffen are 51T6 ( NATO reporting name: SH -11 Gorgon ), the endoatmosphärischen 53T6 ( NATO reporting name: SH -08 Gazelle ). Mid-1990s were given consideration to equip the ABM missiles with conventional warheads splitter after experts predicted that even a single nuclear explosion over Moscow would contaminate an area of 200 km ² radioactive. Thus, the long-range 51T6 missiles in 2003 were retired and began to equip 53T6 short-range missiles with conventional warheads.
