Style

On Van der Graaf Generator 's third studio album after the reunification in 2005, not long compositions find the first time more and it now dominates again rather than the organ (as on Trisector ) the guitar. The band still shows its versatility, because the album combines a quiet, complex and aggressive pieces that either remind the progressive rock of the 1970s and Peter Hammills solo albums or integrate modern and experimental sounds. The song lyrics are predominantly of numbers, formulas, and the beauty of mathematics.

Reception

The album was well received by the press. Although Roger T. Prog Sphere doubts that A Grounding could appeal to a wider audience than just the old fans of the band in Numbers. Rob Hughes of Classic Rock Presents Prog but considers it the strongest album since the reunion and Jochen Frey beef from the Baby Blue Pages says: "Despite some recourse to the glorious past is A Grounding in Numbers not a backward-looking album. Van der Graaf Generator are one of the few bands from the golden age of progressive rock, which still make compelling music. "
