Daring to Love is a British television film directed by John Hough in 1987 based on a novel by Barbara Cartland with Helena Bonham Carter and Diana Rigg.

Action

The game addicts Sir Giles Staverley is lured into a trap, as he plays with his old opponent Lord Harry Wrotham to his own home and loses. Wrotham is a desperate Staverley one last chance and plays his win against the hand of Staverleys daughter and a sum of 80,000 guineas. Staverley loses again. Unable to his daughter Serena to look into his eyes, he finally kills himself. Lord Justin Vulcan, a notorious and clear-thinking players, then requests Wrotham out and plays with him around the house and the girl. To Wrothams outrage he wins. Justin is now in the possession of a house and a girl, but do not know what to do with it. After he met but Serena and finds that she is much younger and prettier than he has imagined, he invites them to his family estate, notwithstanding his spiteful mother Lady Harriet Vulcan. While Lady Vulcan attempts to marry Serena with any man except her son, Serena and Justin become friends and he leads them through the corner of his beloved home. A crisis separates the two from each other. Serena, left alone with his mother, hovers soon in great danger, as Lady Vulcan seek of their lives. This leads to a chase through the whole property. Despite Serena's knowledge of the secret passages of the castle, it sits in the case soon. But at the last minute rushes Justin to her aid and everything takes a good output.

Criticism

Daring to love has been received by the critics referred to as a friendly and intelligent but entertaining movie. Especially Helena Bonham Carter was praised for her performance, her Serena is described as impressive, charming and pretty.
