A Modern Jazz Symposium of Music and Poetry

Occupation

A Modern Jazz Symposium Of Music And Poetry is a jazz album by Charles Mingus, which was recorded in October 1957 and first published by Bethlehem Records. It was recorded shortly after the albums Tijuana Moods and East Coasting.

The plate

" The Modern Jazz Symposium " was the opportunity to experiment with texts and sounds for Charles Mingus. "Scenes In The City " Ideas resumes that Mingus had already outlined in " Foggy Day" ( on the LP Pithecanthropus Erectus 1956 ), there, however, with greater perfection. " New York Sketchbook " is so to speak the same piece to " Scenes", great composed and performed with a superb solo by trumpeter Clarence Shaw, who grows beyond himself (quoted Morton / Cook). In addition, the panel contains three instrumental numbers of the Mingus band.

"Scenes In The City " is to be seen in close relationship with Duke Ellington's " Harlem Air Shaft". The reciting poem was written by the author Lonnie Elders with the help of the poet Langston Hughes. The narrator is Melvin Stewart; he produces a looser, " hipper " jazz just talk. " Scenes" is the story of a boy and his relationship to jazz; it is intended to illustrate how someone who is not a musician who lives in the heard of him music of New York City and it reflects; so is every note he hears a part of him.

The original title of " New York Sketchbook " was " a tourist in Manhattan " and was intended as a musical portrait of the city and the district.

"Duke 's Choice " is intended to reflect the mood of the music of Duke Ellington, with the Mingus employed again and again. The solos are by Clarence Shaw.

" Nouroog " (also " Neuroog " ) here is a feature for the ballads Arts Shafi Hadi (aka Curtis Porter). As a replacement for the diseased flu Clarence Shaw jumped on the last day of the sessions, as " Nouroog " should be included, trumpeter Bill Hardman one. Mingus Shaw should have insulted so desolate for its absence, that this his profession gave up a while back and only submitted in 1962 shots. " Nouroog " was recorded by Mingus in 1962 under the title " Do not Come Back" on the Town Hall concert, and then again on Epitaph.

" Slippers" is a swinging piece in 4/4-Beat with solo part of Jimmy Knepper and Shafi Hadi.
