A Place to Stand (film)

A Place to Stand is a Canadian short film by Christopher Chapman from the year 1967.

Action

The film shows the life and works in Ontario, Canada: Earth and tree felling and processing of wood, the work of the metal industry and the glassblower, pictures of activities on the beach and by bicycle, forest fires, ice hockey, ice skaters, ballet training, food and markets, grain and its harvest, turkeys and tobacco to cigarettes. Here are pictures of lakes and canoeists, fashion shows and hype - and pool fun, horse, car and dog sled races, the activities in the port, including shipbuilding, curling, fishing and bird hunting. The scenes will be shown on multiple screens at the same time.

Production

A Place to Stand was built for the Ontario pavilion of Expo 67 in Montreal. Chapman used for the film for the first time the so-called "multi -dynamic image technique" could be played on a screen in different shots simultaneously, and in part the same scenes from different perspectives are shown in parallel in the film. Overall, so material could be summarized by a length of 90 minutes in 18 minutes. The filming of the scenes took place in the course of two years; the movie budget was around $ 500,000.

The film has no dialogue. However, it is several times the song A Place to Stand, A Place to Grow sung, written especially for the film and was promoted to an unofficial anthem of Ontario. The song was written by Dolores Claman (music) and Richard Morris ( lyrics) and was orchestrated by Jerry Toth. The recording of the song took place in March 1967 with a 45 - piece orchestra and 15 choristers were involved. The film saw its premiere on April 28, 1967.

Awards

At the Chicago International Film Festival A Place to Stand for a Gold Hugo was nominated for Best Short Film. He won the 1968 Academy Award for Best Short Film and Best Short Documentary was nominated for an Oscar in the category. The Canadian Film Awards A Place to Stand Award for Best Film of the Year and received the award for the best sound editor.
