A Portuguesa

A Portuguesa ( German: the Portuguese ) is the Portuguese national anthem. The text was written in 1890 by Henrique Lopes de Mendonça, the music was composed by Alfredo Keil, whose father was a German Schneider at the royal court in Lisbon and whose mother was from Alsace.

A Portuguesa is determined in the Portuguese Constitution (Article 11, § 2) as the national anthem. It replaced the Hymno since Carta.

Heroes of the sea, noble people, Brave, immortal nation, Is today again the splendor of Portugal! From the mists of memory, O Fatherland, the voice will sound Your venerable forefathers, The you will lead to victory!

To arms, to arms! Over land and over sea, To arms, to arms! Fighting for the Fatherland, Against the cannons march, march!

Desfralda a invicta Bandeira, À luz do teu céu viva! Brade a Europe à terra Inteira: Portugal não pereceu Beija o teu solo jucundo O Oceano, a rugir d' amor, E teu braço vencedor Deu mundos novos ao Mundo!

Hisse the undefeated flag In the living light of your sky! Call it Europe, all over the world: Portugal has not perished! Kisses the ground, your serene. The ocean, roaring of love, And your victorious arm Has new worlds given the world!

Greet the sun rising About a laughing future; Be the echo of an insult The signal of a new beginning. The rays of this powerful twilight Are like the kisses of mother, The protect us, sustain us, Against the injustices of fate.
