A Respectable Wedding

The Respectable Wedding, original title: The Wedding is a play ( one act play ) by Bertolt Brecht from the year 1919.

Brecht " The Wedding" written as a 21- year-old student. He shows himself to be a student of Karl Valentin; the effects of epic theater sound in it at first discreetly. The premiere of the " wedding " was held on December 11, 1926 at the Schauspielhaus Frankfurt in a production of Melchior Vischer instead. The extension of the title in " The Respectable Wedding " Brecht took before later.

Action

In the one-act play written by Bertolt Brecht " The Respectable Wedding " played the idyll of the petty bourgeoisie is provided comedic flaunt. The bride's father keeps trying stubbornly different stories to tell from an earlier period. The bride told the guests proud of homemade furniture of her groom because she does not want that her father proclaims embarrassing and inappropriate anecdotes. More and more guests leave the wedding as the entire party gets out of hand. The wedding dinner is ruined and destroyed the furniture. It starts with clear in broken table leg, goes over a ruined sofa to a bed eventually crashing together, in which the couple is at the end of the festivities. Brecht built into the piece a short dialogue in which the protagonists exchange snide remarks about his own play " Baal ," apparently with the sly intention to arouse the public's interest in his drama. The wedding, which was supposed to be the happiest day in life of a bride is in control not only furniture but also the good reputation of the newlyweds, especially the pregnant bride and the seemingly perfect world of the petty bourgeoisie are destroyed to a farce.
