A Saucerful of Secrets is the second album by British rock band Pink Floyd. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios of EMI in London from October 1967 to April 1968, the album was released on 29 June 1968. From a commercial perspective, the album was less successful than its predecessor, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn: In the UK charts, the album only managed 9th place, in the U.S. it is still the only Pink Floyd album that never reached the charts.

Classification and backgrounds

In the time of origin of the album, the strong increase in mental health problems of band founder, lead guitarist and vocalist Syd Barrett falls. Was especially evident in the last rehearsed with Barrett and from that Scream Thy Last Scream composed songs and Vegetable Man, who held the band unfit for the album and the unreleased to this day. Since Barrett became increasingly unreliable and unpredictable, the remaining musicians decided to get a second guitarist in the band. The choice fell on the first musicians Jeff Beck, whose commitment, however, turned out to be too expensive. Then David Gilmour was asked. Gilmour, an old friend of the band, and especially from Barrett, the band performed during the current recordings to A Saucerful of Secrets in January 1968 as first in support, and later as a substitute Barrett. In later interviews, the band members recalled that they initially did not want to separate from Barrett himself. Initially it was planned to continue with five musicians. In situations where Barrett was obviously in no shape to play a concert or take a picture, you have but a precaution left him at home. Eventually the band from the outset without Barrett had traveled to gigs, what the situation with the time for all was to be obvious. The last recording of " A Saucerful of Secrets" were therefore completely played by Gilmour. Officially, the separation of Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett was announced on April 6, 1968.

On A Saucerful of Secrets is heard in the title Corporal Clegg for the first time the drummer Nick Mason as a singer. Since the musicians did not stop the recording after the event for managed Mason did not pursue on their later albums largely on lead vocals.

The album cover was the first work of Hipgnosis. Pink Floyd were by the Beatles, the second volume, which EMI was given the right to hire their own designers.
