A Social Grace is the debut album by American progressive metal band Psychotic Waltz. It was released in 1990 on the record label Rising Sun Productions and the band's own label Sub -Sonic.

Creation and publication

After demo recordings in 1986 and 1988 Psychotic Waltz played a 1989 and 1990, their debut album. A Social Grace was produced by Mike Harris and the band. In the U.S., it was released by the band's own label Sub -Sonic and without professional marketing in Europe via Rising Sun Productions. Metal Blade Records put the album in 2004 in a box set with the third album Mosquito, live recordings and video clips New, Century Media published it in 2011 on LP.

Style

Psychotic Waltz play on the album Technical Progressive Metal, which occasionally recalls the basic features of Fates Warning or Watch Tower, with its instrumentation ( flute, Vibraslap, tambourine), Buddy Lackey dreamy vocals and the psychedelic -tinged atmosphere but is very independent. It can be found both complex structured pieces with many breaks and heavy riffs and catchy ballads and harmonic passages.

Reception

A Social Grace was back in 1990 -received by the press and is now regarded as a seminal album and classics of progressive metal. Judge Wolfgang Schäfer from Rock Hard, it offers " a probably unique blend [ ... ] is not exactly easy to digest ." Michael Rensen referred to it as a "miracle that so much atmosphere as much sorcery, " fit on an album. Is Fierce by Vampster, the band understand it " perfect, deliver progressivity with hardness, catchiness and claim to connect [ ... ] and an album on which there is absolutely no loss ". Both Rock Hard and the eclipsed magazine chose A Social Grace to fifth place their list of the most important prog metal albums.
