A. O. Scott

Anthony Oliver Scott ( * July 10, 1966 ) is an American film critic and journalist. Currently, he is, along with Manohla Dargis, chief film critic for the New York Times.

Life

Anthony Oliver Scott was born as the son of two historians. So his mother Joan Wallach Scott professor of history at the Institute for Advanced Study, and his father Donald Scott is professor of history at the City University of New York. He is also a great-nephew of actor Eli Wallach. Scott attended several private schools in Providence, including the Classical High School before he earned his degree from Harvard University Magna Cum Laude in literature.

Then Scott began his career with the New York Review of Books as assistant to the literary critic Robert B. Silvers. In addition, he wrote for Slate magazine and reviews for Newsday. After Janet Maslin end of 1999 gave the Principals of film criticism in the New York Times, he moved there in January 2000. As her successor Elvis Mitchell in 2004 gave up his post, he took these, along with Manohla Dargis.
