A.G. Visser

Andries Gerhardus Visser ( * March 1, 1878; † June 10, 1929 in Heidelberg (Gauteng) ) was a South African poet and physician who lived long in Heidelberg (Gauteng).

Life

Vissers ( German: Fischer) parents lived in Carnarvon ( South Africa) and his mother was pregnant with him, as a great drought drove the parents out of the home. Andries was born in Zaaifontein, District Fraser castle, in a material bearing in the shade of a pear tree. The family settled in Daljosafat, where the son attended the school ( the Hugenot Memorial School ). His schoolmates were two later writers Totius and DF Malherbe here.

He spent his high school years in Normaalkollege in Cape Town. For the study of medicine, he went from 1901 to 1906 to Edinburgh, Scotland. After graduation worked as a doctor in Carnarvon (1907-1909), Steytlerville (1909-1916) and Heidelberg ( 1916-1929 ). He was in his Heidelberg years a close friend of the poet Eugene Marais. He married twice, in 1913 Lettie Conradie, who died in 1920 and Marie de Villiers. Visser died in 1929 in Heidelberg, where you can still his house today - can see - from the outside. Among the few attractions of the place is one of the Visser Memorial.
