The club was relegated in the next two years quickly twice in a row, reaching the Serie C2. In 1997, the promotion to Serie C1 and the takeover by Aldo Spinelli took place two years later. With the financial strength of Spinelli they rose again in 2001 on the B series.

In 2003, Cristiano Lucarelli returned to his hometown back and led Livorno with his 29 goals in 41 games for the third place in Serie B in 2003/2004 and thus to the promotion to the Serie A. After 55 years Livorno was again top notch, what many experts led to the hasty judgment, Livorno will stay again immediately.
