General

Importance

The A1 is part of the Pan-European Corridor Vc, of the Pan-European Transport Corridor V leads as a side corridor (Kiev - Venice) from Budapest to Dalmatia.

The Corridor is realized in Hungary by the M6 and the Eastern Croatia ( Slavonia ) by A5. These are continued in the A1, which in turn merges in the south to the Croatian A10.

Toll

The highway is a toll road since April 2008.

Route

The A1 runs north and south through Bosnia and Herzegovina. Followed is largely the route of the main road M17 along the rivers Bosna and Neretva. The highway passes by, among others, the important cities Odžak, Doboj, Zenica, Sarajevo and Mostar. South of the border they should be continued in Croatia as a motorway A10 and connect to the local A1.

In addition, the A1 is an important part of the future bypass of Sarajevo.

Progress

The Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina has decided that the highway from Sarajevo to Mostar Zenica is to be built in the years 2009-2014, with the section between Jablanica and Mostar should first be removed only as a half- highway. Alone on this section it is 38, give some very long tunnels (over 3000 m to 6500 m).

Between Kakanj and Sarajevo ( Jošanica ) the highway has already been completed and is passable. The length of this part of the piece is 37 kilometers.

The avoidance of Sarajevo is located since 2007 in construction. Late 2009 or early 2010, with the construction of the sections Kakanj - Bilješevo ( about 9 km) and Bilješevo - Drivuša ( Zenica -South) (about 4 miles) started. The second portion consists primarily of the tunnel Vijenac ( 2964 m). The end of 2011 also began the construction of the southern section Kravica - Bijaca on the Croatian borders.

The total length of the operating and construction sections is thus 66.5 km.
