The A2 is a trunk road in England that runs between London and Dover. In contrast to the other digit numbered A- roads it does not form the boundary between two street numbering zones, but extends centrally through the zone 2 The boundary between zones 1 and 2 formed by the River Thames. The leadership of the A2 goes back to the Celts. The Romans built the road with paving stones; as they built the first bridge over the Medway. In 1922, the road in the course of numbering the number 2 and road class A. Dover is located at the narrowest point of the Ärmelkanales. According starts from there a ferry to the mainland of Europe to Calais. In Calais then forms the N1 to Paris, the French quasi- sequel - so are two European capitals together.
In 1922, the first installation of the A2 on a ring road ( Gravesend ( Watling Street) ); 1924 was followed by the first -pass of Dartford. In 1927 the road " Shooters Hill " relieved through a bypass of the A2. Further extensions and workarounds followed from 1968. Moreover, today is between Stroot Faversham and the M2 motorway, the alternative for leading through the towns of A2.

In Northern Ireland, a A2 was established in 1922. It is a coastal road and it runs between Londonderry and Newry.
