The Aalkistensee is a lake in Enz near Maulbronn and Bretten Kraichgau in Baden-Württemberg. It is located in the eponymous nature reserve.

The lake is formed by a natural impoundment of the Salzach River on a Wall. Already in 1553 the lake under the name Unterefflinger lake was mentioned. The current name of the lake comes back to a practice of the monks of the monasteries Oelbronn - Duerrn and Maulbronn. They kept on in boxes for Lent in the lake eels.

The lake has national significance as a breeding and resting place endangered and threatened with extinction species of birds and spawning grounds for amphibians. Today, one can observe numerous species of birds, such as coots, herons, grebes, swans and wild geese.

Nature reserve

The nature reserve Aalkistensee extends over the entire surface of the lake and beyond. Along the Dobel Bach, the area extends east to the B 35 in the south to the railway line of the Western Railway. The 50.5 -hectare area ( reserve number 2042 ) was provided with by Regulation of 21 December 1979 protection and is attributed to the natural environment of the Kraichgau and Stromberg -Heuchelberg. As an essential protective purpose was called " the preservation of the lake with the surrounding, diverse wetlands and slope zones in their character, diversity and beauty ", with the privileged nature in addition to the national importance as a breeding and resting place for birds and an amphibian spawning waters from the signification of area is measured as the habitat of species-rich plant and animal communities and the importance of the lake as the site of large-scale reed banks, in his bank area as growing area of endangered plant species such as Teichampfer and marsh ragwort.
