Aalten

Aalten ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in the eastern Netherlands in the province of Gelderland near the border with the German state of North Rhine -Westphalia. Aalten lives mainly from agriculture, small business and tourism. It has a small railway station on the line of the regional railway Arnhem - Winterswijk, operated by Syntus.

Aalten is neighboring the German town of Bocholt and was formerly part of the railway line Lichtenvoorde -Bocholt.

With the municipality reform of 1 January 2005, the neighboring community Dinxperlo was dissolved (about 8,600 inhabitants) and part of the municipality of Aalten, which previously had about 18,900 inhabitants.

  • Dinxperlo: The place has the peculiarity that since the First World War, the border with Germany going through the midst of about 9,000 inhabitants site.
