Aar Gorge

The Aare Gorge is a gorge near Meiringen in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. It is crossed by the Aare and increases its flow rate significantly. The Aare river leaves the canyon with almost 12 km / h

A lime - rock barrier between Innertkirchen and Meiringen, the Kirchet, hindered the flow of the Aare from the Grimsel area. Melt water under the glacial Aargletscher notched seven canyons in this natural barrier. Today Aare Gorge is the youngest of different transverse and longitudinal ravines.

The length of the Aare canyon is 1400 meters. At its narrowest point, the gorge is one meter wide; the highest sidewall extends 180 feet above the river.

1888, the canyon was made available. It created a catwalk and 1912 was an evening lighting it. The gorge is open daily from early April until November 1, and you can traverse over the webs and smaller bypass tunnel. At the entrance on the west side of the station Aare Meiringen West and the East Entrance is on Innertkirchen side, the tunnel stop Aare Gorge east of Meiringen- Innertkirchen train.

As can be read from the place name Innertkirchen already, the rock bolt the Aare gorge divides the valley into "inside" and " outside ". The main road number 6 rises to the steeper south side by three hairpin bends around 80 meters to 710 meters on Lammiboden, from where the road at a uniform slope to Meiringen (602 m) drop. The gorge is not visible from the street.
